With a little 1.1% gain in October 2024, new car registrations in the EU halted their downward trend. After three months of fall, Germany recovered with a 6% increase, while Spain led the way with a strong 7.2% growth. There were declines in Italy (-9.1%) and France (-11.1%).
Ten months into 2024, the number of new car registrations stayed steady at 8.9 million (+0.7%). Spain’s (+4.9%) and Italy’s (+0.9%) markets saw gains, while France’s and Germany’s (-2.7% and -0.4%, respectively) saw decreases.
Vehicle registrations in the EU by power source
In October 2024, the market share of battery-electric vehicles stayed steady at 14.4%. Volumes thus far this year have decreased by 4.9%, and market share has decreased from 14% to 13.2%.
In October 2024, registrations of plug-in hybrid vehicles also fell by 7.2%. This month’s market share for this kind of vehicle was 7.7%, down 0.7 percentage points from the same time last year.
Electric vehicles
In October 2024, there were 124,907 battery-electric vehicle registrations, a 2.4% increase. With the overall market share at 14.4%, the year-to-date market volume was still 4.9% less than it was during the same time last year. The main cause of this loss was a notable drop in registrations in Germany (-26.6%).
Registrations of plug-in hybrid vehicles dropped 7.2% last month, after sharp drops in France (-26.9%) and Italy (-24.9%). Plug-in hybrids made up 7.7% of the automobile market in October, compared to 8.4% the previous year. Volumes thus far this year have also decreased, falling 7.9% from the same time last year.
October saw a 17.5% increase in hybrid-electric car registrations, and their market share grew to 33.3% from 28.6% the previous October, surpassing gasoline car registrations for the second consecutive month.
Cars that run on gasoline and diesel
Overall, sales of gasoline-powered vehicles fell 6.8% in October 2024. With registrations falling by 32.7%, France saw the biggest loss, followed by Italy with a decline of 10.1%. Germany was the only significant market to see increase, with gasoline automobile registrations rising by 3.7%, while Spain had a more moderate decline of 1.6%.
Compared to 33.4% in the same month last year, petrol-powered vehicles currently make up 30.8% of the market. Last October, the market for diesel cars fell 7.6%, giving them a 10.9% market share. Generally, about two-thirds of EU markets saw declines.
