American Legion Post 11 is no stranger to fundraisers. Usually, the veterans’ organization is helping out someone else; this time, they’re asking for help themselves.

The Jaffrey Post 11 building needs some “home improvements” – with its most pressing and expensive need being a new roof, said bar and office manager Denise Barlow in an interview Monday.

The post is currently running a fundraiser for their building fund, where residents can purchase a brick for the post’s newly planned walkway, which they can inscribe with their name or in honor of a loved one for $50.

The nonprofit often gives back to the community, including donations to the local youth baseball field, the Boy Scouts, and creating dinner baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas, their current task. Proceeds from this fundraiser are going into their building fund.

“We do a lot of fundraisers to give back to the community,” Barlow said. “This one in particular is for ourselves.”

Barlow said the main priority for the building is the roof, which needs full replacement, at a potential cost of $27,000 to $50,000, based on current estimates.

“We need a roof over our head before anything else,” Barlow said.

And that list of “anything else” isn’t short, either, she said. The building will also eventually also need a new floor, a new computer system, and upgraded furniture.

“It’s like anything else, when you start a wish list, it just grows,” Barlow said. “But [the roof] is a bigger fish to fry.”

Barlow said she knows better than anyone that for a lot of people right now, they don’t have a lot extra to give. Post 11 reopened in June after the COVID-19 stay-at-home orders had lifted, but she said business has not ever fully recovered to the pre-pandemic levels.

“It’s nowhere near what it was last year,” Barlow said. “Everyone’s facing the same problem, so we’re fortunate for any support we get.”

The fundraiser provides donors with a brick for the new Post 11 walkway, with up to three lines of type. To request an order form, call the Legion Office at 532-7975, or purchase a brick directly through the Post 11 online store at jaffreylegion.com.
